The Brother embroidery machine file format is .PES – so any embroidery file you have with this file type for embroidery machine will work on YOUR embroidery machine. Be aware though that sometimes very large PES embroidery files will not work in your machine, depending on the machine or size of hoop you have. Sometimes with older machines, the embroidery machine will tell you that the design does not fit into the hoop – and you know it is the correct size. Most of the time the embroidery machine will rotate all PES embroidery files so that they will all fit into the hoop. The Babylock embroidery file format is also PES, and all of the same rules apply.

If you are not sure what embroidery file extension you need, you can always use the embroidery file type that ends in DST. DST is a commercial file format, but it will work in just about any embroidery machine. The only problem is that this embroidery machine file format does not carry the colors. That means that each color change will be a random color and you will have to program the thread colors into the embroidery machine before you start to stitch. This will work on single needle embroidery machines as well as the multi-needle machines.

The first thing to do is figure out what machine embroidery brand you have. That will be written on the front of your machine as well as on the boxes of the machine. It will be in big, bold letters! Once you know what embroidery machine you have, then you can visit the brand’s website and it will let you know what file format you will need to use for embroidery. The file type for your embroidery machine will never change for your machine.
