Video: an introduction to Applique

Have you ever wanted to do appliqué but didn’t know where to start?

Start here!  This is a 25 minute video on how to do appliqué – from the basics of what appliqué is, some hints and tips, and then how to create your own appliqué.

Start with a good solid foundation this new technique, and start with a simple design that you can digitize for yourself – once you get that down, you will be able to create amazing designs and add appliqué!

What is appliqué?  it is an embroidery technique that you can add some material to your design to add some color and style to just about any embroidery design.  Keep the appliqué simple and you won’t go wrong.

The easier way is not to cut out the object from a print of the die line but to stitch the die line, spray temporary adhesive on the wrong side of your fabric, lay your fabric right side up to cover the entire outline and run the tack down stich. Now remove the hoop and carefully cut around the outside of the tack stitch with embroidery scissors. Replace the hoop and run the satin stitch and the object will be perfect.

    • Yes, that is another way of doing appliqué. It comes down to personal choice – whatever you think works best for you, and whichever way gets you the results you want. I personally have done both with great results. I usually get my kids to cut out the appliqué for me – they seem to be better at cutting than I am.
